Packing is sometimes the most terrifying part of travel, as we never really know what to expect from our adventures in the places we have chosen to visit, and so we often leave this chore to the very end, tossing in a motley selection of clothing, shoes, and accessories that may or may not be worn in the end. When you choose Sedona for your vacation destination and Mighty Tree Properties for your vacation accommodations, you also choose a sort of style guru, allowing us to guide you in your packing adventures. Hello, Summer!

First, let’s talk weather. A summer in Sedona, while nowhere near as hot as it can be in the central part of our state, can still get pretty toasty, so be prepared to wear less. But also prepare for a rather substantial temperature difference when night falls, as much as 30 degrees or more, meaning you may want to pack a jacket or two. Daytime temps nudge 100 degrees, although they rarely rise into the triple digits, and nighttime temps can drop into the high 50s; see the dilemma? Of course, we have your back, and throughout our next paragraphs, we will cover every possibility.

Summer Is Sundress Season

We think we can all agree that whoever invented the sundress should be canonized, because that one piece of clothing can be worn in all sorts of circumstances, and we can assure you that it will be most appreciated in the summer in Sedona. Shopping is a popular Sedona activity, so we suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes with your lightweight and oh so colorful sundress (we live for color in Arizona), and because your feet may get more than a little sweaty in shoes and socks, you might want to pack some of those walkable flip flops a certain shoe store is famous for. Flip flops, by the way, are the official shoes of the season and can be a part of a dressy night out by switching to sparkly wedge flip flops, taking up far less space in your suitcase. Sundresses can be dressed up or dressed down as well, and if you want to wear yours out for a night on the town, a warm and colorful kimono will elevate its style!

Casual Is Key

Here’s the thing about Sedona: We aren’t fancy people, and we don’t see the need for fancy clothing unless we are celebrating something special, but even then, fancy may be a sundress glammed up with a glittery throw or a lightweight bowling shirt for the guys, left untucked over loose and lightweight trousers. During the daylight hours, however, most people will wear tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops, ensuring that there will be plenty of room left in your suitcase for souvenirs you will buy during your Sedona shopping adventures. You may want to consider a baseball hat or floppy sunhat, especially if your skin is fairly sensitive to the sun’s rays, and if you forget your sunglasses, you will regret that forgetfulness every moment it takes to get you to a store where you can buy a new pair! That sun is bright, and even though the temperatures stay below 100 degrees, your eyeballs may feel like they are being burned out of your head. And while we are on the topic of the sun, even though this next tip has nothing to do with fashion, it will have everything to do with comfort and style if you forget to wear sunscreen, because no one thinks the lobster look is attractive!

Outdoor Adventures Require a Different Wardrobe

Sedona is known for its red rock formations, vortexes that vibrate with energy, and scenic trails that are popular with hikers and bikers and if you are planning on doing either or both, you will need to pack a little differently. First and foremost, we recommend comfortable and sturdy hiking shoes and boots and at least a couple of pairs of socks to guard against blisters. A single pair of lightweight hiking pants can be washed and rewashed if you plan on hiking many times over many days, and if you have ever purchased those pants that unzip at the knees, transforming into shorts, know that you will finally have the opportunity to wear them without feeling dorky during your hikes in Sedona. Most hikes should be started early and be completed no later than noon, so dressing in layers that you can peel off one by one as the sun rises higher is important. Another important hiking accessory is water, and if you have ever bought one of those CamelBak hydration packs, now is a great time to add it to your suitcase as well!

A Night on the Town

Sedona does have a cultural side, known for its art galleries, wineries, and the Sedona Performing Arts Center, but as we mentioned above, casual still works, especially if you dress it up with a bit of glitter. Even better, if you WANT to wear your fancy clothes, no one will judge you, leaving you free to wear whatever you want for your nighttime adventures. And if you originally decided you were just packing sundresses and shorts, but after you arrived discovered you were in the mood to fancy it up a bit, don’t despair, just schedule in a visit to Victorian Cowgirl-Posh, located at 181 AZ-179. Offering a stunning selection of clothing that really could be described as a cross between Victorian and Western, you will light up the night wherever you choose to play after the sun sets over the red rocks!

Leave Your Jewelry Behind

Of course, if you are married, you may want to leave your wedding rings on, but even that may be considered optional once you begin to explore the jewelry you can purchase during your shopping expeditions in Sedona. Offering not just silver and turquoise (although there is quite a bit of that for sale), you may find a new ring you want to add to your existing set, especially if you visit Wayne B Light Sedona’s Fine Jewelry at 40 Soldiers Pass Road 1 & 2. In any case, if you do pack your jewelry, be prepared to add some weight to your return luggage, as you won’t be able to resist the beautiful jewelry sold in so many stores throughout Sedona, including the silver and turquoise pieces for which we are famous!

Be Adventurous

In real life you may be a businessman required to wear suits, ties, and leather shoes and belts to work every day, or you may be a teacher limited to only wearing clothing that is conservative and can stand up to the demands of tiny hands that aren’t always clean. But during your Arizona journey in Sedona, it is the perfect time to walk on the wild side, bringing out those articles of clothing you have had hidden in the back of your closet, not knowing where you would be able to wear them. Remember the red cowboy boots you bought at the consignment store down the street and were never sure you could pull them off, or the cowboy hat you couldn’t resist purchasing during your visit to the Stetson Outlet Store in Texas? Pack those babies in your suitcase and wear them proudly while out and about in Sedona, even if it is a little hot for boots and a heavy hat. If you don’t have a cowboy hat and want one, True West Hats, 252 N State Route 89A, sells them, as well as fedoras, sun hats, straw hats, and many other styles.

Don’t Forget Your Swimsuits

Is there any greater luxury than a day spent poolside sipping frothy margaritas while the kiddos frolic and splash in the cool blue waters? You won’t have to wonder for long, as many of our Mighty Tree Properties offer private or community pools and hot tubs for you to explore here in Sedona making a swimsuit (or three) very important to your packing success. Additionally, Slide Rock State Park offers a super long natural waterslide carved out over time from the erosion of water over sandstone and many, many, many bottoms that have ridden the “ride” over the centuries! Your Sedona sanctuary will probably offer beach towels, but a sturdy swimsuit is highly recommended for that adventure in some pretty cold waters, even during the summer months.

Have We Forgotten Anything?

We’ve covered everything from cowboy hats to swimsuits, reminded you of the importance of sunscreen, water, and being colorful, and informed you of the casual nature of Sedona style, so we think that just about covers it. But we do want you to know that you will want to pack light, saving room in your suitcase for all the treasures you will return home with, perhaps wearing your new cowboy hat home on the plane. And because our Mighty Tree Properties also offer washers and dryers, you can pack less and wash more, should you decide you need more room for cool stuff like crystals and artwork. Coming home to our Sedona sanctuaries each night is sure to add something wonderful to your Arizona journey and although we know have been very helpful with our packing advice, we thought we would take a few minutes out of this essay on style to shine the spotlight on the places you will call home during your time in Sedona.
