There is no better way to celebrate getting halfway through the year than with a summer vacation for the family. Whether it is during your children’s summer break or a quick weekend getaway, a summer vacation is just what everyone needs. There is no better place to consider this summer than Asheville. You will find that the summer season brings out a ton of fun with summer activities and local events all over the area. Take a look at what you can start preparing for this summer in Asheville:
Downtown After 5
The summer season is a great way to see all the fun ways that Asheville celebrates the season. Summer in Asheville is warm and delightful, allowing you to spend as much time outdoors as possible. One exciting monthly event you can look forward to this summer is Downtown After 5. This is our monthly evening of local music along with tasty drinks and treats. Downtown After 5 takes place on the third Friday every month during the months of April through September. Downtown Asheville will open up on these evenings where local music including jazz, country rock, classic soul, blues, funk, and much more will be played by local musicians. A variety of adult beverages including ciders, beers, and seltzers will be on tap and local food vendors will be on hand to provide tasty food. Don’t miss out on this all ages event taking place every Third Sunday right here in Asheville this summer.
Check Out Local Hiking Trails for the Family
One activity that is always perfect in the summer season is hiking. Whenever you travel somewhere you may look for the local trails that are a must see. Sometimes you will come across hiking trails that are not ideal for families such as those with rigorous ratings. Luckily, Asheville has many family friendly trails that are right by many of our vacation rentals. Head on over to the Asheville Botanical Gardens for a lovely selection of easy trails that are a joy to explore. Additional trails that are worth checking out also include Black Balsam and Pink Beds. You can explore these trails by foot or pick up a rental bike from a local shop. Richmond Hills Park has many new upgrades that make it a great spot for biking including their disc golf course and improved trails. Time outdoors in the summer is just what the soul needs.
Shindig on the Green
The summer season is also a great time for live music especially in events that are free to attend. You will find Shindig on the Green returning once again this year to Asheville. This outdoor festival takes places in the center of Downtown Asheville and features mountain bluegrass music. This weekly festival takes place every Saturday during the months of July and August at Pack Square Park. You will find bluegrass and old time string bands hit the stage along with ballad singers, clog dancers, and storytellers starting at 7:00 PM each evening. The event will provide a family friendly experience where you can bring a blanket and enjoy the live entertainment on a spot on the lawn. The event typically ends around 10:00 PM but this is Asheville where the locals prefer not to have hard timelines when they are having fun.
Ride the Blue Ridge Parkway
Asheville sits on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains that are a beautiful backdrop to the city. You can see the incredible views of the mountains by enjoying a car ride through the Blue Ridge Parkway. This has been voted as America’s favorite drive where you can stop by and check out the frequent lookout points that show off some of the incredible views. Stop off at Beaver Lake in North Asheville along your drive for views of the lake or explore the Wilma Dykeman Greenway that is connected to the River Arts District. The Parkway is just the start to your incredible exploration of Asheville.
Hit the Ballpark
When you think of summer, you may think of a day enjoying your favorite baseball team back home. During your visit make sure you check out a game from the Asheville Tourists. This is our local minor league baseball team that play at McCormick Field in Downtown Asheville. Local games are held on Friday nights with fireworks after the game ends. The hot dogs are always $1, making it a family friendly activity that is easy on the wallet.
