While the parish was founded by French immigrants in the late 1700s, the building you see today took quite a journey to get here. After years of construction, a devastating fire in 1898 nearly destroyed its entire structure except for the two spires and some outside walls. However, the community didn’t give up, and they worked tirelessly to restore the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist to its former glory when the redecoration was completed in 1912. Ever since then, the cathedral has seen renovations between 1959 and 1963, and modern restorations to keep this holy site well-maintained throughout the years.
When you look up at the towering spires, you are seeing classic French Gothic architecture at its finest. The interior is just as impressive, featuring 81 stained glass windows and murals that earned it the nickname “The Sistine of the South.” We recommend taking a moment to look at the Great Rose Window above the organ.
