Memorial Day in the Smoky Mountains
The Great Smoky Mountains is a truly incredible sight, especially when you get to see them in clear weather during the summer. Memorial Day Weekend is a great time to come see the mountains up close and personal. You will find that Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge will have all kinds of activities ready to go for your stay. The Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride will see hundreds of motorcyclists take to the road between Sevierville and Clinch Mountain for a tribute to our nation’s armed forces. Of course, you can always take the time to explore Great Smoky Mountain National Park too. This national park offers over 800 miles of trails to explore including popular spots such as Laurel Falls and Andrews Bald. Some paths are even paved, making them easier to navigate for younger children in the family.
When you are ready to cool off from the heat, book a whitewater rafting experience. Local companies such as Ober Mountain and Big Creek Expeditions offer guided rafting tours in the local rivers. You will have plenty of options for experience levels making sure you find the tour best for you. Memorial Day in the Smoky Mountains never looked so good!
Memorial Day in Asheville
North Carolina, specifically Asheville, is another great spot to spend your Memorial Day Weekend. You will find that Memorial Day Weekend will feature all kinds of fun. Friday May 24th will be the kickoff to summer with the Asheville Drum Line from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM offering a dancing circle with drummers at Pritchard Park. Asheville also has plenty of incredible outdoor adventures to take part in. The area is known for zip lining, hiking, waterfall exploring, water tubing, and white water rafting. French Broad Adventures offers a variety of whitewater rafting through the rapids. Choose between class I through IV to find the option that matches your skill level. They are found just half an hour outside of Downtown Asheville, making it easy to get to them. The easier rapids are even family friendly so the whole gang can join in on the fun. If you are looking for picturesque moments head over to Chimney Rock just 25 miles outside of Asheville. You will find one of the tallest waterfalls in the area along with a 500-million-year-old monolith for you to get views from up top of. More outdoor adventures can be found in Asheville for Memorial Day Weekend.
Memorial Day in NYC
If you prefer a big city moment for your Memorial Day Weekend, head on over to New York City. The city offers two different Memorial Day parades that take place on Memorial Day itself. The Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade marches from 78th Street and Third Avenue all the way to John Paul Jones Park. Another parade can be found at the Little Neck Douglaston Memorial Day Parade that leads from Jayson Avenue and Northern Boulevard on down.
For a little history with your stay head over to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum that is docked at Pier 86. This real aircraft carrier now houses this local museum where you can learn all about World War II and the fighters and ships that participated in the battles associated with the war. They offer a variety of Memorial Day activities all weekend from a movie night to demos and displays. They end Memorial Day Weekend on the holiday itself with a closing ceremony. Additional naval ships will also be open for tours, including the USS WASP at Pier 88 South and HMS Scott at Pier 88 North. Make sure to confirm locations prior to your arrival as locations may change prior to Memorial Day Weekend. As you can see history buffs will have a great time here in the city!
