One of the best reasons to visit Asheville around the holidays is to check out the local events going on. Thanksgiving offers plenty of reasons to be thankful so join the locals in celebrating the holiday right. All across the country many individuals will wake up on Thanksgiving morning ready to give their body a little workout before indulging themselves with a delightful feast. One of the most popular ways to start your Thanksgiving holiday is to participate in a local turkey trot. This is a race, often 5K in length, that supports a local cause and helps everyone get their appetite started for later in the day. Asheville has our very own turkey trot with the appropriately named Asheville Turkey Trot. This year’s race will be our 22nd consecutive one and is shaping up to be a ton of fun!

This local race benefits the MANNA FoodBank that has supplied over 34,000 meals for those in need just from the race’s proceeds alone. The Asheville Turkey Trot will take place Thanksgiving morning and will start with a 1-Mile Gobble Run that is perfect for children and those who just want to enjoy a quick run. The turkey trot itself is a 5K race and will benefit shortly after the 1-mile run. Participants are encouraged to have all the fun they want by dressing up in their favorite turkey costumes. No pets are allowed at the race however strollers are allowed and encouraged to start in the back of the pack to prevent race congestion. The race will begin at the YMCA and make its way before ending at Pack Square Park. Registration is required to participate in the race and is open now; register early to save on your overall fees that will go up closer to the race. The 1-Mile Gobble Run will start at 8:30 AM with the Turkey Trot starting soon after at 9:15 AM. Come get your holiday appetite started with the Asheville Turkey Trot!

Each Halloween season, Ancient Lore Village is taken over by spooky characters and unique attractions exclusive for the season. We are of course talking about the Sow and Grow Fest that will take place on September 14th. This local event is a great opportunity to participate in lively gardening demonstrations and peruse local vendors with plenty of gardening items for sale. Local musicians Laura Blackley and Ashley Chambliss will be providing live entertainment and there will be plenty of family friendly activities. The event is free to get into; however, there is a $20 potluck ticket that will help support the Organic Growers School’s Grow for Good Fund to assist farmer training programs and mentorships. This year’s Sow and Grow Fest will take place from 1:00 – 5:00 PM on September 14th.

River Arts District Second Saturday Art Stroll

Many cities have their own version of a monthly art walk that brings together local artists and a variety of activities. Asheville has its own version with the River Arts District Second Saturday Art Stroll. On the second Saturday of each month in the fall you can see over 300 artists set up in historic warehouses in the arts district. Fall dates will include September 14th, October 12th, and November 9th with the event typically running from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Explore the different artists’ creations and shop their wares just in time before the holiday season kicks off in the winter. 48th Annual July 4th Midnight Parade

Now when you explore different cities to visit you are sure to find bold claims that say a city is the best in a certain activity. While some cities may be exaggerating their claims you will find that there is no lie when Gatlinburg claims to be the most patriotic city in the country when it comes to the 4th of July! For almost 50 years, Gatlinburg has hosted a dazzling display of patriotism with the annual July 4th Midnight Parade. This year will be the parade’s 48th annual year being celebrated and is getting close to the big half century tradition taking place in 2026.

The Midnight Parade kicks off at exactly midnight, making it the first Fourth of July celebration taking place in the country each year. The parade kicks off the festivities with a new Grand Marshal each year, with this year’s special host being the ACA Awards New Male Artists of the Year Nominee and GOLD Selling Country Music Artist, Conner Smith. He will usher in this patriotic tradition in red, white, and blue of course and make sure it is the biggest event yet.

The Midnight Parade is named year after year a Top 10 Parade in the US by National Geographic and is sure to wow your whole family. A congregation of festive floats that are decked out in decorations from top to bottom will make their way through downtown Gatlinburg along Baskins Creek Bypass. The parade will also feature marching bands playing patriotic tunes along with larger than life balloons and much more. While you may have to stay up late in order to catch the event seeing the 48th Annual July 4th Midnight Parade is sure to create lasting memories for you and your family.

Meet and Greet with Conner Smith

Attendees of the 48th Annual July 4th Midnight Parade will also have the chance to attend a meet and greet with Conner Smith himself the day before on July 3rd over at Old Smoky Moonshine Holler. Starting at 2:00 PM this event will offer the chance for exclusive photos and autographs with the artist. The meet and greet will be offered on a first come first served basis so expect attendees to line up early for this hour long event. You can find Ole Smoky Moonshine Holler located at 903 Parkway over in Downtown Gatlinburg.

Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales

During the month of July, the Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales event will take to the streets again. This month long event is a street performance festival with daily performances from costumed musicians, dancers, and storytellers who all portray characters from a variety of time periods dating back to the 1800s.
